June 2026: Transference & Countertransference

For June, our consultation theme will be Transference & Countertransference. This work calls us to prioritize our relational awareness, monitor our internal reactions, and embrace countertransference not as a “mistake” but as a source of clinical data and possibility.

To Prepare:
Watch: Deliberate Practice for Countertransference Reactions – Webinar with Dr. Hanna Levenson
Read: Managing Countertransference with DBT Skills: Mindfulness and Emotion Regulation

Optional Materials:

  • APA Monitor: How to Manage Countertransference in Therapy

  • Transference and Countertransference in Palliative Care

  • Managing countertransference: what the experts think

Previous resources we’ve used in past years (optional refreshers) can be found in your online classroom!

Reflection Questions

  • Which emotions, somatic responses, or reactions tend to signal that transference or countertransference may be occurring for you?

  • What helps you remain grounded and regulated when you notice strong internal responses to a client?

  • What feels challenging, confusing, or ethically complex about working with transference or countertransference?

  • What support (supervision, consultation, skill, boundary, or personal insight) would strengthen your confidence in navigating these dynamics?
